Season 9 Draft Recap - Toledo through Wichita

Position(s): SS/IF/OF/DH
View Hardball Dynasty Profile

Toledo Tsunamis
--With the #3 pick in the draft Toledo took potential megastar SS Sal Fox. Fox is a hitting machine who has just enough glove to play SS, but may see a shift to 3B or CF in the future if he doesn't develop fully defensively. His bat though needs no conditioning, he will be very good in the lineup for years. 2nd round pick CF Al Cook is very solid defensively, with good contact and batting eye skills at the plate, but is otherwise weak with the bat. SS Roscoe Hill and 2b Raymond King might make the bigs as backups, but otherwise the only other notable pick in the Toledo draft was 6th round selection Beamer Blowers, who gets the Times Herald award for best name in the draft.
Grade: B+

Rolando Hernandez
Toronto
Blue Jays
Age: 22B/T: R/R
Born: New Plymouth, ID
Position(s): SS
View Hardball Dynasty Profile

Toronto Blue Jays
--The Blue Jays draft was a bust, with 1st and 2nd round picks RF Melvin Gonzalez and P Wilton Bates electing not to sign. That left their highest signed pick 3rd rounder SS Rolando Hernandez, an average hitting and fielding SS. 5th round pick LF Stephen Smart shows some major pop with the bat, but otherwise there isn't anything worth mentioning in the Blue Jays draft. The sting of the non signings was lessened significantly by the signing of international superstar SP Benito Beltre, but this draft still did not turn out well for Toronto.

Position(s): P (SP2)
View Hardball Dynasty Profile

Vancouver Grizzlies
--With the 19th pick in the draft, Vancouver selected SP Ed Mills. He looks like a potential ML 3-4 starter. He'll have enough stamina to stay in games late, and he has two decent pitches (slider and curve ball), an average fastball, and a crappy slider. His high health and makeup are also very handy. Supplemental pick (33) SS Erubiel Bonilla could be a steal at 33. Bonilla has the potential to be a star ML shortstop. He is projected to be a great fielding SS, but his bat is what makes him an exciting prospect, with above average hitting skills across the board. 2nd round pick RF Dan Lincoln is solid, as is 4th round pick 2b Tom Cornelius. 5th round pick 3b Xavier Caminiti has major league power and might make it as a backup somewhere. This was a pretty solid and deep draft for Vancouver.

Wicita Wankers
--The Wankers used the #17 pick in the draft on 1B Vic Flores, a slugger with no weaknesses at the plate. The health nut should be able to play most games, and has a better than average glove for 1B, but it is his awesome skill with the bat that makes him a very solid pick. 2nd and 3rd round picks Mo Hodges and Steven Neal might make the majors in the bullpen, and 5th round pick 2b Stevie Milligan has some intriguing splits and skills at the plate that might allow him to be a backup somewhere. Otherwise it's just a bunch of minor leagues in the Wankers draft.

Season 9 Draft Recap - Seattle through Tacoma

James Cole

Age: 22B/T: R/R
Born: N. Bethesda, MD
Position(s): 2B/IF/OF/DH
View Hardball Dynasty Profile

Seattle Seacows
--With the #4 pick in the draft the Seacows selected future all-star SS James Cole. The complete package in the field and at the plate Cole has megastar written all over him in permanent marker. Supplemental pick(37) SP Dennis Adcock would also be a star if he didn't have nightmarish control (projects to 30), which is a shame because everything else about him is top notch. Supplemental pick (44) Matt Conigliaro is a slap hitting LF with a good eye, but average splits. 2nd round pick C Todd Hemphill is a very good hitting and fielding catcher who is better than either supplemental round pick. 3rd through 5th round pitchers Donovan Maxwell, Ricardo Ortiz, and Alex Pickett all have big league potential as well. This was a pretty good and deep draft for the Seacows, despite the flaws of Adcock and Conigliaro.

Sioux Falls Corn Cleats
--With the #14 pick the Cleats took LF Lyle Crudale, one of the most complete hitters in the draft. His fielding skills are only just good enough to get him into the LF position, but his bat should more than outproduce any errors he might commit. 2nd round pick 1B Raul Javier is an average 1B who might make the bigs, but is more of a AAAA player. The 3rd through 5th round picks for Sioux Falls are also AAAA players who will probably spend most of their career in the minors.

St. Louis HoundDogs
--The HoundDogs took CF Goose Benes with the #27 pick in the draft. He is an all around contact hitter, has decent speed and an outstanding glove for 2B. He looks a lot like Rabbit Lara, but with a higher ceiling. Other than having one of the ugliest mugs in the draft, there really isn't anything exciting about 2nd round pick LF Kris Prince. The rest of the draft features minor leaguers and fringe players.
Grade: C+

Josh Roundtree

Syracuse Beagles
--The Beagles took SP Josh Roundtree at #25 in the draft, a pinpoint control pitcher with 3 good ptiches. Only average vs. right handed hitting, Roundtree is otherwise solid. 2nd round pick 1B Jolbert Guerrero is solid vs. lefties, but otherwise doesn't stand out. The Beagles also scored three very solid defensive shortstops in Benito Rosado, Diego Silva, and Nicholas Vaughn. Otherwise the draft featured minor league support.
Grade: C+

Joaquin Rivera

Tacoma Jerry Gang
--Taken at #7 in the draft, Joaquin Rivera is a tricky lefty with excellent control and 3 good pitches. He has above average splits and should thrive in Tacoma's pitchers park with his 3 70+ pitches. 2nd round pick CF Brett Baker might make it to the majors because of his glove, but his bat is only average. 3rd round pick C Peter Cain definitely has a major league future based on the strength of his defense and his skills vs. left handed pitching. 5th round pick C Tom Lambert might make the majors as a DH, but his PC is too low to be an effective catcher. The rest of Tacoma's draft features a few fringe prospects and some minor leaguers.

Season 9 Draft Recap - Philadelphia through Scranton

Vladimir Espinosa

Born: San Marcos, TX
Position(s): C
View Hardball Dynasty Profile

Philadelphia Floppin' Phils
--The Phils only had 2 high picks due to their type A FA binge in the offseason, but they made them count in #15 overall pick C Vladimir Espinosa, probably the best overall catcher in the draft. Espinosa can hit quite good, and has excellent defensive and pitch calling skills. #45 pick Guillermo Sanchez is a better hitter, but less talented behind the plate, and is probably better suited to be a very talented DH. There is nothing else worth noting in the Phil's draft, but for having so few picks, they made them count.

Pittsburgh SSP
--The SSP took SP Vance Scheppers with the #20 pick in the draft. Scheppers is a workhorse SP who should make the bigs, but his weakness vs. right handed hitting could be a crucial issue in determining whether he is a starter or long relief. But his control and velocity are excellent, so there are high hopes he will fulfill his promise. 2nd round pick Beamer Stevenson projects to be a solid but not spectacular setup man in the pen, and 3rd round pick Eric Helling could make the bigs if he can overcome his control issues. 4th round pick Emmet Shields skill vs. right handed pitching could land him a spot on an ML roster, but after him there really aren't any big league prospects in the draft.

Richmond Cohibas
--By now everybody knows about the spurning of the Cohibas by #1 overall pick Eric Houck, which was a shock to the league when one of the best pitching prospects in recent memory decided to pursue a career in fashion design. Richmond still managed to snag a couple of good prospects in spite of the Houck fiasco in SP Brian Wesson and RF Bernie McNamara. Wesson sports good control and pitches, but has some problems vs. right handed hitting. McNamara is a slap hitter with a good eye, but lacks the power for a corner OF position. 4th round pick RP Bo Peterson might make the bigs, but after him the Cohibas draft doesn't show much talent.

Santa Fe Heat Wave
--With the #5 pick in the draft, the Heat Wave went for a future ace in SP Roosevelt Fox. Fox sports all the tools necessary to become a #1 starter once he fully develops. His control, velocity, and splits are above average, but what makes him special is his awesome pitch selection with 4 65+ pitches, and a 45 rated 5th pitch. 2nd round pick P Carson Wise should make the majors in some capacity, as should 3rd round pick 3b Walter Haney. The Heat Wave's draft drops in quality significantly after Haney, although 14th round pick C Bing Munoz could be a sleeper to make a name for himself. The scoring of Fox was a pitching prospect this team desperately needed.

Boasting above average splits and power, Rojas also has a good enough glove to play anywhere except SS. 2nd round pick Nap Nickle is a CF with a major league glove and a minor league bat. 3rd round pick P Ricardo Rivera has bullpen potential, but after him there isn't really anyone else who might make the bigs.

Season 9 Draft Recap - Nashville through Pawtucket

Nashville Rebel Riders
--With the 18th pick in the draft Nashville chose RP Bret Cosby, a hard throwing right hander with all the tools to be a top tier closer. His only potential weakness is his GB/FB ratio, but if he develops fully he should be able to overcome that problem. Supplemental pick (39) Peter Hinske could be a steal if he can overcome his control issues, as the rest of the package with him is right on for a back end starter, from his splits to his 3 excellent pitches. 3rd round pick SP Morris Eckstein is a fringe player at best, but 3rd round pick P Pedro Serra should be very good in a setup role in a major league bullpen. 4th round pick Albert Gutierrez has an elite major league glove, but after him the draft gets weak.

New York Pick Pockets
--With the 13th pick in the draft the Pick Pockets selected SP Al Morales. Morales has all of the tools necessary to become a front end starter, but needs to spend enough time in the minors to fully develop his skills vs. right handed hitting, which currently are weak. But lefties better watch out vs. Morales, who has a knack for putting them out. 2nd round pick SP Al Santos doesn't have the skills necessary to be anything other than a minor leaguer, and the same can be said for the other 16 pitchers taken by New York in the draft. Outside of Morales, there really isn't much to write about here.

New York Titans
--With pick #24 the Titans selected SS Joel Valentin, an above average hitter for the SS position, but with a projected glove rating that probably makes him better suited to 3B. He should still be a productive hitter at the hot corner however, but don't expect to see him at SS in the majors. Supplemental pick (41) Trever Street should be able to overcome the horrible misspelling of his first name and his suspect durability to become a solid pitcher in the bigs. 2nd round pick Alfredo O'Keefe didn't sign, and the rest of the draft contains fringe players at best.

Omaha Sluggers
--The Sluggers picked very late in the draft at #30, but still managed to score a very good offensive player in Harry Ordaz. Ordaz has good power for the 2b position, and above average hitting skills elsewhere. Supplemental pick (43) Don Walker should make it as a back of the rotation ML starter. Omaha's 3rd through 5th round picks are all fringe players who might make the bigs on lesser teams, and after that the quality of the draft starts to suffer.

Pawtucket G-Maniacs
--Due to the bonanza of picks the G's had, the Cobb Times Herald took this scouting report directly from the Pawtuckets scouting office. Ajax Worley (29) is a slugging 1B/DH who apparently likes to smoke a lot weed. Look at his eyes, he's high right now. He was the third rated 1B in the draft but the G-Maniacs needed to add a heavy bat to lineup which Worley should provide in a few years. Now only if we could get him off the dope, he'd be a true DITR. Trever McMillon (32) should be a valuable long relief pitcher with good control, splits against righties and a dominant first pitch. His other pitches are hittable and will hold him back from being a top pitcher. Albert Velazquez (34) is a slick fielding 3B with a decent bat and a great eye. He should be a valuable piece to a championship team as a starter or a utility player. Howie Owens is a contact hitting right fielder with a decent arm who looks like he could be a number two hitter in the future with his excellent bunting skills. Buck Jenkins (36) is a RF/LF with a fair bat but a great eye. He will most likely be a role player. Sandy Jefferies 42) is a slick fielding, slap hitting short stop who will be very valuable to a defensive minded team. The rest of the draft contains quite a few AAAA players. This was a very deep draft, although lacking in star power outside of Worley.

Iowa City Corn Dogs
--The Corn Dogs picked up a winner with the #12 pick in the draft with 2b Carl Alexander. Projected to reach lofty heights near a 90's OV ranking by some scouts, the power hitting Alexander shows absolutely no weak spots and has top 5 pick talent. 2nd round pick 2b Weldon Anderson is solid with the glove and above average with the bat, but lacks Alexanders power. 3rd and 4th round picks 2b A. J. Monroe and SP Ernest Bryant also have enough talent to make it as role players for a major league team in the future. Definately a productive draft with a can't miss prospect for Iowa City.

Kansas City KILL
--The KILL had the opportunity to make a big splash with the #2 overall pick in the draft, and they did just that with the signing of RF Vinny Jang. A complete package at the plate, Jang should post Hall of Fame numbers over the course of his career if he doesn't get injured. Jang is also above average defensively for RF as well. 2nd round pick RP Don Coleridge is an exciting bullpen prospect with good control, splits, and pitches. The 3rd through 5th round picks should also make the big leagues as well, especially 4th round pick RP Phil Koh, whose only weak point is his suspect control. This was a solid draft for the KILL.

An exceptional contact hitter, Rose should hit for a high average, but only with average power. Supplemental pick (47) Sandy Tatum may actually turn out to be a better player, as he is better with the stick than Rose in all areas other than contact. 3rd round pick 3b Sid Sheffield might make it as a backup, but the rest of the draft is nothing but career minor leaguers.

The only problem with him is that his only other pitch projects to a 32, so it will be interesting to see if he can get by on his top two pitches alone. Still, it was a very good pick for that position in the draft. Supplemental pick (40) RP Geoffrey Knight projects to be a solid setup man in the pen, while 3rd round pick SS Lawrence Cornelius should be a wiz with the glove with some surprising skill at the plate vs. right handed pitching. The rest of the draft is composed of AAAA players to career minor leaguers.

--The Hellraisers had a very successful draft, scoring a front end starter at #16 in Pablo Sisqueros. The high schooler could be a #2 starter, with pinpoint control and 3 good pitches. The lefty has decent splits and has been dominating the rookie league (0.88 WHIP, .176 OAV). 1st compensatory pick (#38) Ernie Muratore is a left-handed starter who has better splits than Siqueiros, but doesn't have the control or the three good pitches. He has 1 great pitch and another good pitch, and is very tough against lefties. 2nd compensatory pick (#46) Esmailyn Alfonzo should be an average 2nd baseman if he develops defensively, or a below average outfielder if he doesn't. 2nd round pick Max Guapo has potential to make the bigs as a relief pitcher, and 3rd round pick Abdul Duckworth boasts major league power and should make a lineup somewhere at some point.

First round pick (#8) Randall Slaughter is a hard throwing right hander with pinpoint control, above average splits, and no weak pitches. He definitely has #1 or #2 starter potential. 2nd round pick RP Neil Brush is more of a risk, who projects to be dominant at closer if (and it's a big if) he can overcome his suspect control. 3rd and 4th round picks Gregg Durbin and Philip Brinkley should make a major league squad in some capacity as well.

Jude Harris, taken at #21, is definitely solid gold as a hitter, with his only drawback being his lack of power for the position. 2nd round pick C Hector Mercado has a major league bat, but his catching skills are only average. 3rd round pick SP Tony Kramer is good vs. righties and boasts above average control, but only having 3 average pitches is a detriment. After Kramer the talent level starts to drop considerably. This was a solid but not specatacular draft, considering Huntington basically used their top two picks on positions where they are already very deep.

Anaheim Sharks
--Anaheim scored a good first round pick in Wayne Burns, a good hitting everyday 3b who can really toast lefties. His only downside is his average defense for 3b, and his weak batting eye, but it is still a good value pick at #31, projecting to an 81 overall. Second round pick Harry White didn't sign, and nobody else that the Sharks drafted has any real major league potential. Burns is a good player, but not enough to make this more than an average draft.

Halama has the potential to be a top of the rotation starter. Control and Splits project excellently and he has 4 pitches that project over 60, including a knuckler projected at 100! His velocity projects to be outstanding and excellent durability and health are a plus as well. Drawbacks are low stamina and low GB/FB ratio. He should be able to over come these and form a powerful 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation with Omar Valenzuela in the future. The Pitbulls draft didn't stop with Halama however, as all of their rounds 1-5 picks have big league potential. This was debatably the best draft in the league this season.

Houck Turns Down Millions to Tailor Suits.

Tito McQueen - Cobb Times Herald

The Richmond Cohibas were stunned yesterday by the announcement from #1 overall draft pick Eric Houck that he would be attending college instead of signing the 5 million dollar contract he was offered by the pro franchise. Houck turned down the incredibly lucrative contract offer to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology on a baseball scholarship. "I have always wanted to pursue a career in the clothing arts, and with the skills I learn at the FIT, I hope to craft many fine outfits and eventually make the bigtime, perhaps Project Runway or Fashionista, and then springboard to owning my own fashion house."

Many baseball analysts consider this to be a very questionable move by the young pitcher, who projected to be one of the most dominant players in recent memory on the mound. One scout said, "He could have been the next Dean Hernandez or Phillip Brown, his stuff is that good. It's a real shame to see him sewing buttons and zippers instead of mowing down batters with his awesome stuff." Because he decided to pursue a career outside of baseball, scouts didn't have any problem releasing their top secret projections for the all star, and the Times Herald is able to show you what he could have been if he had signed.

Bill Howell, GM of the Cohibas, was distraught after Houck's announcement. "We were BURNED! You pays your money and takes your chances, but tonight is a Jim Beam and Oxycodine kind of night."

Meanwhile the Fashion Institute of Technology baseball team was ecstatic at the news of Houcks scholarship. "This is so totally the best thing ever!" said coach Templeton Riggs III, "Houck will help the Tigers roar, GRRR!" According to FIT curriculum Houck will have to sew his own jersey, and that rhinestones are allowed around the collar. "I'm really looking forward to bringing my own sense of personal style to the FIT uniform, I want to be fab on the mound!" exclaimed Houck, who appropriately was fashionably late to his press conference.
